This emanates from the fact that line out possesses more components in its internal circuitry. It’s also possible to use an external power source to power up your unit when using line out, something that’s impossible with pre-out. Unlike pre-outs, line out possesses a volume control knob that allows you to alter the level at which there will be amplification. These two audio signals also differ in the following ways. Line out sends a copy of the output from an audio interface or mixer straight to the PA system, while pre-out provides a boosted version of this signal for use with monitors and speakers. The primary difference between pre-out and line out is the path they take to get to your amplifier. The Difference Between Pre-Out and Line Out So, it simply sends your sound signal outside the mixer to be combined with other devices like headphones and speakers. Line out, on the other hand, is a fixed voltage signal that allows connection with the external speakers. This implies that the source device (for instance, the headphone amplifiers or DAC), will amplify the signal before sending it to your speakers or other audio equipment. In this article, Audio Curious seeks to help you avoid such consequences by providing an in-depth explanation of the pre-out and line out threads to help you understand what they are, their differences, and how to use them. Improper connection and usage of these signals can result in unwanted consequences. Although pre-out and line out are both signals that should go into your audio interface, they are both different in terms of their functionality and make. ![]() They refer to an audio signal passing through a device such as a preamplifier, mixer or power amplifier. Pre-out and line out are two different types of audio signals found in most live sound setups. ![]() I'm running SVS Prime Tower's up front, Martin Logan 8 center, SVS PB1000 dual subs, and Boston Accoustic surrounds. What does pre-out and line out mean? There are many terms used in audio, but these two can be really confusing especially if you’re new to audio. The Onkyo is still good sounding but something for me wasn't there. The Onkyo steps up to the plate with movies not so much music, I tried various settings and music sounded more flat and contained like they were packaged/suffocating and not open exposed and bright like the Marantz. On one rock song (nine inch nails or godsmack) the drums flowed across from left to right so clearly I could hear each separate tuned drum I felt I visioned the actual drummer and my jaw just dropped in awe, never experienced this before now I know why you guys are here. Regarding sound quality comparison (music not movies) I can only describe the Marantz being very bright, controlled, and detailed. During AccuEQ calibration it didn't give me the option (not sure if it's supposed to) to correct phase for the subs like the Marantz Audyssey did, I believe the Marantz are separate for subs I only had it for a week so far. I believe the pre-outs are tied together and not discrete separate channels. I had to ask Onkyo about those too when connecting dual subs they said connect each sub to each pre-out. Yes the pre-outs are confusing I don't know what the engineer was smoking it simply needs labeling to clear the confusion.
